AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS

Absorb the air around you to develop energy for heating your home!

Air Source Heat Pumps

Our electricians can install air source heat pumps which operate by absorbing heat from the outside air. The heat that is generated through this process is utilised to warm water for radiators or underfloor heating installations. Our electricians can install air source heat pumps to warm the air in your home or commercial premises.

Air Source Heat Pumps – How Do They Operate?

Air source heat pumps are installed by our electricians to extract heat from the air and work in a similar way to that of a fridge. Whereas a fridge extracts heat from the inside, an air source heat pump does the opposite. Air source heat pumps can extract heat from the air at very low temperatures. Your electrician will confirm how the air source heat pump can operate with a low outside temperature of minus 15° C.

Two Versions of Heat Pump

  • Air-to-water systems are installed to utlise heat for the provision of warm water. The heat pump will heat water to lower levels than boiler systems; therefore they are applicable for underfloor heating instead of radiator installations.
  • Air-to-air systems create heat to warm air which is then distributed by fans to heat your home or commercial premises.

Air source heat pumps efficiency is measured by its coefficient of performance (CoP). This is the quantity of heat produced in comparison to the amount of electricity required for its operation. The average coefficient of performance for an air source heat pump is approximately 3.

Can I have An Air Source Heat Pump Installed In My Premises?

Our electricians will provide some advice on the installation requirements of air source heat pumps. Here are some preliminary things to consider:

Air Source Heat Pump Installation by electrician
  • Have you got somewhere to install it? The electrician will need to install the outside air source heat pump unit in a convenient location outside your home or commercial premises, either on the wall or installed on the ground. The unit will require sufficient space around it to ensure the right flow of air.
  • How well is your home insulated? Air source heat pumps create less heat than conventional boilers, so it is critical that the property is well insulated. Your electrician will advise that the property is correctly draught proofed to ensure the air source heating system is operationally efficient.
  • The replacement of fuel? The air source heat pump system will be a more economical investment if it replaces electricity, LPG or a coal system. Air source heat pump systems are not as economical when they replace Gas or oil systems.
  • Which Air source heating system is for you? Air source heat pumps work better in conjunction with underfloor heating or warm air heating solutions than radiator installations.
  • Are air source heat pumps just for new construction? Your electrician will confirm the retrofit options available for you, however if the installation is completed in combination with other construction work the overall installation costs can be reduced.

Costs & Savings For Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pump undefloor heating by an electrician

The costs for the installation of an air source heat pump system by a Mr Electric electrician can vary depending on the size of the house and other factors such as how well the home is insulated.

From an environmentally friendly point of view the savings can be significant, when correctly installed by our electricians. You could save in the region of 5 tonnes of CO2, which could save you £1000 per year for a system that replaces a conventional electric heating installation.

These savings have been calculated using an air source heat pump that provides 100% of the space heating and up to 50% of the hot water requirements. The extra 50% that is required is provided by an electric heater for installation by Mr Electric electricians in a detached residence.

Our electricians will promote the installation of other microgeneration technologies to further reduce your properties CO2 emissions and to save you money. Our electricians will offer solar electricity solutions or other renewable technologies for generating power and heat in your home.

Air Source Heat Pump Funding

The government has many initiatives in place to encourage the growth of microgeneration technologies. There are grants available to assist you with the installation costs of renewable and low carbon technologies. For more information contact us on 0800 7311 606, or visit the Low carbon Buildings Website funded by the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Grants are available if you use a microgeneration certified installer and a microgeneration certified product. Click here for more information on Microgeneration technologies.

Advantages of Air Source Heat Pumps

An air source heat pump collects in the region of a 1/4 of the electricity that a standard resistance heater collects for the equivalent amount of heating, which means you have reduced energy bills.

Air Source Heat Pump advantages
  • When installed by our electricians the air source heat pump has very few moving parts, which reduces the maintenance requirements of the unit. The outdoor air source heat pump unit and fan should be kept free from leaves and unwanted rubbish or debris.
  • As an air source heat pump is an electric system, there are no flammable or potentially asphyxiating fuels used at the point of heating. This provides greater safety due to a reduction in the potential danger to users.
  • An air source heat pump can be utilised to heat air or water.
  • The air source heat pump system can be utilised for air conditioning purposes in the summer, in conjunction with its heating function in the winter.
  • Air source heat pumps have lower running costs compared to other heating sources.
  • Air source heat pumps save space as they are compact and they require no fuel to be stored.

Air source heat pumps are another of the new microgeneration technologies that can help you become more energy efficient and save money.
