EV News From Mr Electric Car Charger Installer in Birmingham
Electric vehicle stations now outnumber petrol stations
For anyone still in doubt about the longevity and future of electric vehicles, new figures have revealed how electric vehicle charging stations now outnumber petrol stations for the first time.
The figures from Zap-Map show the extent to which the green revolution has already taken hold as there are now more public charging stations for electric vehicles than there are conventional petrol stations.
As of May 22, there were 8,471 charging locations across the UK, hosting 13,613 charging devices, compared with only 8,400 petrol stations at the end of April. The latter figure continues to decline, while the number of public electric vehicle charging stations – not to mention domestic charge points – is growing at a rapid rate.
The number of charge point locations has also increased by 57% in the past year, with the infrastructure now available up and down the country. This is continually boosted by more Government-funded schemes and big business initiatives as the inevitably of electric vehicles and demand from consumers rises.
More electric vehicles on the road
The need for more public charge stations is being driven by increasing numbers of electric vehicles on the road, as costs come down and driving ranges improve.
Annual UK sales of electric vehicles hit a record last year and has risen from 3,500 cars six years ago to more than 210,000 now. It is predicted that there will be more than one million electric vehicles on the road by the end of 2022.
The Government has committed to its green transport revolution and is working towards the aim that all new manufactured cars will be ultra-low emission vehicles by 2040.
Ben Lane, co-founder and CTO at Zap-Map, said: “The public and private sectors are now investing heavily in the UK’s EV charging infrastructure to ensure that there are sufficient charging points to support the growing electric fleet. This month’s milestone reveals the rapid pace of change already underway as the age of the combustion engine gives way to an all-electric era with vehicles offering both zero-emissions and a better driving experience.”
