Electric Vehicles neglected in Spring Budget 2018 : How green is the Government?

Today’s Spring Budget 2018 was expected to bring in some good news for electric vehicles, given the government’s focus on promoting electric mobility.  Mr Electric, the UK’s leading electrical franchise brand, however, is hugely disappointed that electric vehicles were ignored.

“How can the government expect to ban all petrol and diesel new vehicles by 2040 and not even mention electric vehicles in the budget”, said Pierre Jeannes, VP of Operations for Mr Electric. “Being a new player in this space, we have a clear and hugely ambitious vision to help our commercial and domestic customers to install electric vehicle points and to help towards the UK’s electrical charging infrastructure, but we are not going to achieve a car fleet with effectively zero emissions by 2050 at this rate.  Shockingly, the Government department responsible for the environment has just two electric cars in its fleet of 4,000 vehicles – 25% of Mr Electric’s support fleet drive electric vehicles, but at least you can say that we practice what we preach.

“We were not expecting any major announcement relating to electric vehicles as the EV Policy is not part of the budget, though it would have been good to have a reference to the future of mobility or green technology and build on the commitment in the Autumn Budget to spend £400m on a new charging-infrastructure fund. We intend to play a key role in this market and are here to stay shaping the future of electric vehicles.”
